Dear Nature is Awesome family,

At this pivotal moment in history, it’s time to come together in support of basic civil and human rights. As a family of birders, and nature enthusiasts, we’ve seen how beautiful a community can be, when everyone works together. A Kirtland’s Warbler is spotted at one end of the Magee Marsh Boardwalk, and a thousand birders will see it, because they will all work together towards a common goal, seeing that bird! And at that moment, age doesn’t matter, birding experience doesn’t matter, it doesn’t matter whether it’s a lifer or not, it doesn’t matter if you are there to photograph it, or just gawk at it, and the color of your skin certainly doesn’t matter. At that moment, what is most important, even more so than seeing the warbler, is how everyone works together, towards that one common goal. It’s a beautiful thing, Life is a beautiful thing!

We want you to know that we promote love ❤️ We promote inclusiveness. We promote togetherness. We believe that birding gives us all a special platform in which we can build strong relationships, that help us excel and flourish as individuals. A platform where we can learn and be cultured. A platform with a feeling of belonging. A platform to love unconditionally. Now it is time to stand strong, to speak clearly, and take action to ensure that everyone can see that Kirtland’s Warbler, before it continues on its journey. We can learn a lot from our feathered friends, a foraging flock in the heat of migration can be incredibly diverse, all working alongside one another, just trying to make it to the next leg of their journey.

At Nature is Awesome, we believe that birding makes us better people. We have to go beyond sharing a bird on the boardwalk. We cannot speak of inclusion in general terms, we must be explicit that we have to stand together, supporting our black communities, and not only within our beautiful birding community, but within the communities where we live. We know that conscious effort leads to meaningful change and real progress. It already has, and it will continue to do so. Black Birders Matter to our community of birders, and to our lives. We love you.
